Branch Cutters
Having the proper tools are essential for maintaining your bonsai tree. The proper tool can help make proper cuts on your tree when pruning, enabling the tree to heal properly. Proper tools also help your bonsai tree a much more pleasant experience.
One of the primary tools that every bonsai enthusiast should have in his/her arsenal is a cutter for thick branches. Two tools that can help you with this are the concave branch cutter and knob cutter. The concave branch cutter features a much more pointed edge while the knob cutter has a rounder edge. The pointed edge on the concave branch cutter enables you to make clean straight cuts along the side of the trunk. It’s pointed shape also helps you reach in between foliage to access branches easier.
The knob cutter cuts by “biting” a chunk off of the branch. This action produces a divot in the trunk. The divot will help the tree heal straight along the trunk. Knob cutters tend to have a wider range of uses than the concave branch cutter due to the style in which it cuts. However, the round edge is sometimes more limited in cutting hard to reach locations.
Ideally, you’ll want to have both tools for maintaining your trees. Depending on the type of trees you have or their growth patterns, you may be able to choose the one that fits your needs the best.
